OUR ANALYSIS

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Sleep Rating: 3.7/5

Tuft & Needle is based in Arizona and owned by Serta Simmons, one of the largest bedding companies in the world. They gained popularity with their original flagship mattress made available online. Tuft & Needle is a brand that boasts simplicity as well as transparency.

What you see is what you get, and what you get from them tends to be at an approachable price for many. It’s easy to see why they’re popular now. Reviews usually speak highly of their customer service, though this depends on the complexity of the issue.

The Final Verdict

The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is a much stronger model than its original predecessor. With a more durable profile and cooling properties, this mattress has the potential to be a nice fit for a lot of couples on a budget. That being said, it has similar pros and cons to the original, so if you overheat often and need extra support, then this mattress is not for you. Thankfully, Tuft & Needle has pretty solid customer support, and all in all this mattress has a great value for the price.

A CLOSER LOOK

A Closer Look at Tuft & Needle Mint’s Materials

The Mint is a 12” boxed mattress that arrives at your door compressed in a box within three to ten business days of placing your order. Since this mattress is thicker than the original flagship model, we strongly recommend having an extra person to help you set up. Tuft & Needle mattresses are American made, and the Mint received the UL GreenGuard Gold certification, meaning it has satisfied the strictest chemical emissions standards tested for by a global safety-consulting and certification company. It has also passed the strict regulations of the CertiPUR-US certification. That being said, if you’re sensitive to materials, you may want to air out your Mint Mattress for a day or so in a well ventilated area before use, as there could still be a lingering off-gassing odor. This should fade in about 48 hours.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Materials

Here’s what the Mint mattress is like on the inside

  • Cover: Removable and hypoallergenic, this zip-off top cover is made of a polyamide and polyester blend, and features embedded antimicrobial protection. We recommend you only spot clean this cover as needed.
  • Top layer: 3” breathable open-cell foam infused with graphite and cooling gel for an initial low temperature feeling
  • Comfort layer: 2” of Tuft & Needle’s signature adaptive foam infused with ceramic and cooling gel provides pressure relief and temperature regulation.
  • Base layer: 6.5” of high density poly support foam provides structure and presents sinking.

Mint Mattress Firmness

While the firmness experience of a mattress is highly dependent on an individual’s weight and body type, the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is most often described as medium firm to medium soft. If we were to put this on a scale of 1 to 10, the latter being the firmest, then the Mint is somewhere between 5 and 6, feeling softer to some and firmer to others.

The highly adaptive proprietary foam from Tuft & Needle is soft while still remaining responsive, so you won’t feel stuck when you need to switch positions. There is no slow moving memory foam in this mattress, so you shouldn’t be sinking or feeling too much retained heat within the mattress, either.

PROS & CONS

Who sleeps best on Tuft & Needle Mint mattress

The Mint comes highly recommended to lightweight side and combination sleepers. If you like the idea of a soft foam bed with cooling properties, the Mint Mattress could be for you!

Couples who want to share something with few disturbances should also appreciate the reinforced edges. Additionally, they should value the quiet foam that makes it easy to get in and out of bed without too much shared motion. Since the Tuft & Needle Mint has a reasonable price, it’s also good for shoppers on a budget who want something nice to sleep on.

Heavy sleepers: If you weigh over 220lbs or are a strict side sleeper, you might not find the Tuft & Needle Mint suitable. Such individuals typically require something firmer, such as a hybrid mattress, to ensure proper midsection support and overall alignment.

How cool is it?

In general, the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress sleeps cooler than the average foam mattress for two reasons:

  1. The first layer of adaptive foam is infused with graphite, and the transition layer is infused with gel. Both are designed to dissipate heat and promote airflow.
  2. The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress does not feature any traditional slow moving memory foam that is known for retaining and trapping heat.

How’s the edge support?

Tuft & Needle’s Mint mattress boasts reinforced edge construction to make it easier for you to get in and out of bed. This enhancement was an improvement compared to the original Tuft & Needle, and guarantees the Mint won’t compress as much as you might think when sitting or laying near the edge. It might be a bit easier to sit on the edge rather than sleep on it, but you could be pleasantly surprised!

How is it for sex?

Since this is a quiet foam mattress with reinforced edge support, the Mint Mattress should be a decent bed for intimacy. The responsiveness of the T&N adaptive foam layer should provide some bounce, and the lack of slow moving foam means you should feel free to move about the mattress with ease.

What’s the Catch?

The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is a relatively straightforward and simple foam mattress, but may be experienced differently from person to person. It may seem too firm, or too soft, and if overheating at night is a serious issue this mattress might not be cooling enough. This mattress simply isn’t going to be a good match for heavier folks who need more support from their mattress. The materials used could give those with sensitivities common reactions like headaches, and could even cause more pain than relief if not compatible.

Tuft and Needle offer a 10 year limited warranty covering their mattresses, but can only be taken advantage of if you are in the United States. This warranty can’t be transferred and only extends to the original purchaser and current owner of the mattress as long as it was purchased directly from Tuft and Needle or an authorized distribution channel. Tuft and Needle mattresses are intended for household use only, not commercial. Be sure to read all terms and conditions before the purchase of any mattress, and keep all receipts and records of purchase in a safe place at home.

What the Tuft & Needle warranty covers

This warranty specifically covers material defects resulting from defective materials or workmanship in the mattress. Deterioration causing the mattress to have a visible indentation greater than three-fourths of an inch (0.75) is covered, as long as it isn’t associated with use of an improper or unsupportive foundation or adjustable bed base. Clear edge defects greater than 1 inch that put the mattress out of dimensional specifications are covered, as well as any physical flaws that cause the material to split or crack despite proper handling and normal use.

The Tuft & Needle warranty does not cover

Natural changes caused by normal use aren’t covered, and neither or changes caused by any abuse or improper handling of the mattress. Physical abuse or damage such as burns, cuts, stains, tears or liquid damage, including mold are not covered.

In other words, don’t take your mattress for a ride down some stairs or a river and expect a free replacement. Uneven surfaces or imperfect shaped corners are not considered defects. Improper use of your mattress could void your warranty completely, so be sure to go over your warranty before contacting customer service so you know whether or not filing a claim is possible.
